Isotopes Baseball

A few weeks ago I won 4 tickets to the Isotopes baseball game through our local library. We had been wanting to go to a game all summer, but its been so dang hot, and everything is just a little more expensive these days. So free tickets, hurray!!! The boys were soooo excited about it the whole weekend. Unfortunately, we woke up to one of the very rare gloomy, rainy, Albuquerque days. It rained on and off all day, which was a wonderful change of pace but not the best when planning to go watch baseball. When we got there, it was pouring, and the game was delayed about 30 minutes, but that was ok. It was 50 cent hot dog night, so we enjoyed some hot dogs while waiting for the game to start.

We had fabulous seats on the upper level of the field, and the boys loved it! Mason was a champ too. We were a little worried about him since his bedtime was the same time as the game starting, but as usual he was very content if I was holding him. He loves being outside too, and is almost always happy outside, so it worked out perfectly. Here are a few pictures:

My littles and I. :)

The boys were fascinated by the covered field

Waiting out the rainstorm!

Cover was coming off!!

Our amazing family

These boys have the best daddy to learn from

Once they finally got the field uncovered and the game underway, the sprinklers came on. Ooops!!!

Of course, ice cream in a baseball helmet!
It was a great night!! We had fun and the boys did too!!!

School Days...

As a parent there are THOUSANDS of decisions that need to be made starting on the day your baby is born. Actually, from the moment you find out you are pregnant. Should I drink soda while pregnant? How much caffeine is too much? Prescription or over-the-counter prenatal vitamins? What color should we paint the nursery? What should we NAME our baby? On and on and on. Obviously some are more important than others, and some have more long term consequences than others. But the bottom line is that you, as parents, need to evaluate each decision and weigh the options for your individual child and family. Each family is different, and each child within that family is different. What might be right for my first child might not be right for my third...etc. Anyway, that being said, one of the biggest decisions that Miles and I have faced so far in our parenting journey is school for the boys. Miles V is 3 1/2 years old, and he is very smart. Of course I think so :). But truly, he loves learning, he absorbs things like a sponge, and is constantly asking questions about his world. That is one of the things I adore about him. About 6 months ago Miles and I started praying and talking about options for Miles V for school. Of course our main options were public school, private school, or home school. Most pre-schools in town start pre-K at age 4. We also did a lot of reading about putting boys in particular into school too early, vs too late, etc. I've always felt that I didn't want to homeschool exclusively. I had a horrible expeirence with a homeschooled roommate in college (NOT you, Char!!!) ;) and I also know my personal limits as far as teaching goes. While I know that I could home school if I set my mind to it, I just didn't think that full-time homeschool was for me. Miles and I have since found the perfect school for our boys. Oak Grove Academy is an accredited private school in Albuquerque which is a combination of homeschool and classroom time. Starting in pre-K (next year for Miles), the kiddos will be in the classroom for full days on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while we 'co-teach' at home on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Miles and I attended the informational meeting about Oak Grove this spring and we fell in love. We love their classical, university style of teaching, and we were super impressed with both the curriculum and what we got to see by sitting in on some classes.

Anyway, this brings me to this year. Since Miles won't be four until January, he wasn't eligible to attend Oak Grove this year. We still felt like he was ready to start pre-school this year. So we did some research and enrolled him into a Tuesday/Thursday program at a local church. We LOVE the program that he is in. There are two teachers per classroom, each classroom is about 15 kiddos, and it is the ideal place for Miles right now. He started school on Tuesday and was not ready to come home when I went to pick him up.

As I mom, I have to say I have struggled with this decision. Most of my struggle was based off the extreme guilt that I felt for 'turning him over' to someone else 8 hours a week. After all, he has been with Miles or I at home all but 4 hours a week since he was born. OF course, occasional trips to Grandma and Grandpa's houses don't surround me with guilt as I am confident the boys are in good hands... but I struggled with turning him over to strangers for sure. As we dropped him off on Tuesday and spent a very unusual morning at home, the guilt was large and present. But God has given me a peace about it, and I really enjoyed my time today with just Max and Mason. I think the 'break' from Miles as big brother will be good for Maxwell. It did break my heart dropping Miles off on Tuesday, and having to tear screaming Max away from his brother's classroom. It is incredible what great buddies those boys have become, and their relationship to each other has exceeded all my wildest expectations. I am so so so thankful that God gave us these boys!

And so, I leave you with a few of my favorite pictures from his first day!

2 yr & 2 mo well checks

Today we saw our pediatrician for Mason's 2mo well check and Max's 2 year check. I'm so happy when I can get two of them in at the same time!

Miles and I both think that Mason is a little chunkier than the other two boys--we don't remember either of them having those adorable little fat rolls on their legs. But, we were wrong. Mason at 2 months weighs 10.8lbs, which is the 30th percentile, and his height is 22 1/2 inches which is the 25th percentile. This is consistent with both of this brothers. Max has always been tiny, but it wasn't until his 9 month checkup that his weight went off-the-charts little. Today, Max weighed 20.2lbs and was 32". His weight was again off the charts---this time negative 10th percentile. He has gained consistently though.. his 18 month check was 17.9lbs and 30 1/4".

I love my small babies so much!!

Mason got three shots plus his oral rotavirus vaccination... this is my third baby but seeing him get shots was just as hard as my first. But once I picked him up he was back his happy self again. And Max received one shot, and he didn't even flinch. I was so proud of him--no tears, just utter facination with his 'Bunny Bugs' (aka Bugs Bunny) bandaid. In fact, all that Miles and Max could talk about on the way to Chick-fil-a were their 'Bunny Bugs' bandaids!! Thanks to the smart nurse for giving big brother a bandaid too. :)

Happy 2nd Birthday, Max!

Today Max turns 2. We are so excited to spend this day celebrating him. In our family, we have 'cake' for breakfast on someone's birthday---its a delicious coffee cake recipie I got from Noel Piper's book, Treasuring God in Our Traditions. Max's favorite book to read (and repeat, since he has it memorized) is Pizza Party, which is all about making pizza. So for lunch, we are making homemade pizza with him. And some good friends and family are meeting us at Applebees for his birthday dinner (his choice), and then coming back to our house for strawberry cake, ice cream, and presents!

Below is the questionnaire I do with all the kiddos on their birthday. This is the first year I've done it with Max. His answers are so cute... he's a bit obsessed with Strawberry Cake, and the ice cream truck!! <3

And below is the letter I wrote to Max to put in his 'birthday' file. :)

To my dear sweet Maxwell on your 2nd birthday,

Oh Max, where do I start to describe the year we’ve had? I think back you your first birthday with a smile… Daddy made you an amazing, giant Elmo cake that will not soon be forgotten (although you will probably only remember it from pictures).. It was HOT last year and yet so many people came out to celebrate with you. I think back farther to the day you were born. Also a HOT HOT July day (the day before, I threatened to stay in the produce cooler at Costco until you decided to come out—and I was only kidding a tiny bit!). You were 5 days overdue with no end in sight and so daddy & I, at the advice of our mid-wife, decided to evict you. Your birth was perfect (if I had to pick my ‘favorite’ birth as far as pain and ease, yours would be it). You have been a joy since the moment I first laid eyes on you (and before!). From the day you were born, you were an easy baby. You were born at 6pm, and we sent you to the nursery around 11 that night just until you needed to eat again. I thought we would sleep a few hours and then you’d be back to eat and snuggle. When I woke up at 5am, you hadn’t been back and the nurses told me you were still snoozing away in the nursery! That night was the first of many amazing nights of sleep. You did that almost exclusively until you turned 6 months old… then you decided you were hungry all the time and you woke up every two hours. That was ok though .

You were 7lbs 2oz when you were born, and at each subsequent checkup you had you were tiny. By your 9 month appointment, you were ‘off the charts’ small. If there was a ‘negative’ growth chart, Dr. Koil said you would have been in the negative 12th percentile. He was a little concerned about your height/weight combination, and about the very consistently ‘high’ number of pooping you did on a daily basis (Thank you very much for that, btws!!  ). So he put you through a battery of tests… he checked you for Celiac’s disease, cystic fibrosis, and about 50 other things that I can’t remember. All I remember are lots of doctor’s visits and a ton of blood draws. To make that long story short, he found nothing wrong with you and since then you have continued to be tiny, but healthy. On your two year birthday, the majority of the clothes you are wearing are 12 month size. Occasionally I can fit you into an 18 month shirt, but you swim in most of them. We are so thankful you are healthy.

Your smile and sense of humor are contagious, sweet boy. You are HALARIOUS. One of my favorite memories of this year is you putting a gift bag on your head at Grandma Jean’s house, and walking around the room, bumping into things and giggling (and making the whole room full of your cousins and aunts and uncles laugh too!). And I will also always remember you and Miles when we bought the van. It had been a long day for the two of you, but you handled it like champs—you both enjoyed playing with the toys the car dealership had out. You both were hungry after 3 hours of waiting patiently (it was 7pm, afterall!)… so I ran to get dinner while daddy ironed out all the details of the deal. You two were sitting at the little two-person kiddie table and waiting for your food. I gave it to you and Miles, while daddy and I sat nearby eating and signing papers. Not long after I heard you two laughing your hearts out. And then I heard the famous words: “Monkey Guck!” We had seen Indiana Bones, a story teller at the library that week, and he was telling a story about monkeys picking up their ‘guck’ and throwing it. To you and Miles, that is still one of your favorite phrases. I have that picture of the two of you laughing hysterically etched into my brain forever. Sometimes those mental images are better than any picture could ever be!

This year, I am so proud of how incredibly smart you are. Whenever I sit down to work on reading or letters with Miles, you are right there listening and learning as well. You can count to 15, and usually follow up with “Ready or Not, Here I Come!” You love playing with play-dough (I love the doughnuts and pizza you make for me to ‘eat’), you love painting and playing “Hot Cheery-O” (aka Hi-Hi Cherry-O). You love to talk on the phone, and anytime my phone rings you want to say hi to whoever it is. You have learned fabulous manners and are so faithful about using them. You can quote Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things, through God, who gives me strength.” You love to snuggle with me while I read to you before your nap, and you always bring your ‘blankie and Elmo’ out of your bed when you come downstairs each morning. You have a strong-will sometimes, but that’s ok—you’ve learned that from me.  You are absolutely the cutest thing. You are an amazing, silly, smart, and loving little boy, and I adore you, Max. I am always excited to look back on where you have been, and where you are going. I know God has great, amazing things planned for you.

Thank you Max… for always saying “I kiss it, mama” if I say something hurts. Thank you for always laughing at silly things we do together. Thank you for eating your pizza with no hands at Costco—it makes me smile. And thank you for sharing sweet eskimo kisses with me. Happy Birthday!

Love,

Mom

Remembering Kramer...

*Photo courtesy of Amy Parish Photography

It has been almost 2 months since we lost our sweet baby dog Kramer suddenly and completely unexpectedly. It is amazing how quickly the heart heals, and yet is left with a hole that will never quite heal. I know this first hand more than I would like, and yet it still is amazing to me what a Healer God is, even in the midst of losing a pet.

I wanted to write some things about Kramer, mostly for my kids to read someday, but I thought I'd share the thoughts on here in case anyone else was interested! Sorry if this is long, do not feel obligated to stick around, but if you do, enjoy the ride!

Miles and I were married in June of 2006. On May 3rd, 2007, Autumn Morning's Cosmo Kramer was born in Brown Deer, WI. Miles and I had put down our deposit on Kramer in early Feburary, and we had second pick of the litter. We picked him out from some pictures, and a trip down when he was 4 weeks old. We fell in love with him instantly and could not WAIT to bring him home. We had to wait until he was 8 weeks old, so we picked him up on June 25th. I tell you, so much of getting and raising Kramer was a parrellel to having our kids! (More on that later). We made a million trips to Petsmart, bought only the best things for him, read a ton of books on dogs, and we felt we were as prepared as we could possibly be. We checked the breeder's website countless times during the days leading up to getting Kramer to see new puppy pictures. I remember the call we got when he was whelped... we were camping in our tent, and we layed down that night and talked about him for hours. When it was finally time to go get him, we literally ran out of the car. He was waiting with the breeder on the stairs of their front door. He trotted his little akward puppy trot down the steps to us, saw us, and proceeded to hop back up into the breeder's lap. We laugh about that now but he was so well taken care of those first 8 weeks that we weren't surprised he was a little hesistant. Kramer @ 7 weeks

I remember making the drive back to our apartment in Wheeling, IL and holding a sleeping Kramer. We took him for a walk to pee and poop in the park right by our house. He had NO idea how to walk on the leash, so it was more of a 'drag him along' walk. :) Looking back on our first few weeks as ‘parents’ to Kramer really parallels to our time as first-time parents to Miles. So many things reminded us of our time with Kramer: from not getting him out of his crate when he was whining, to not letting him chew on our fingers and our shoes, to potty training him with numerous 'cleanups' in the process, to spraying him with a squirt bottle of water at night when he wouldn't stop crying, to putting him in his crate for a few hours when when just needed a little quiet time... ok most of that is a joke but there definitely were some things that helped prep us for real baby time! It was definitely a learning and growing time for Miles and I, as well as Kramer. That summer, we were blessed with 6 weeks of time between jobs to be off of work. We spent time in IL and WI with family and friends before heading off to our new start in Albuquerque. I will never forget taking sweet cuddly little Kramer with us everywhere: from the drive-in in Kenosha that first week we had him, to running along lake Michigan in Sheboygan so much that his paws bled and he had to wear Miles's socks on his feet, to taking him with us to the only pet-friendly hotel in DeKalb for Brad and Kari's wedding. Kramer was comfortable there, but let me tell you, I still have nightmares about the nastiness of that hotel!

Bringing Kramer home!
During our time off from work, Miles's parents had also adopted a new German Shorthaired Pointer, Lainee. She was from IL, so we picked her up two weeks after Kramer, and had both of them with us the rest of the summer. Because we were off from work, Miles and I (ok, mostly Miles!) spent a TON of time training them. Kramer and Lainee were best buds from the time they met. They were together for the first 5 months of their life 24/7. So when our house in Albuquerque was finally finished in Nov of 2007 (we stayed with Miles's parents when we moved out in August), Kramer and Lainee both had separation anxiety living as the only dogs of the house when we moved out. This eventually led us to get another GSP, Sawyer (but more on this a little later).

Kramer, Lainee & Plumper
By the time we moved into our house, we knew a few things: 1) Kramer was a FIREBALL of energy. That dog would run and run and run for HOURS and never ever ever stop. 2) He LOVED to swim, and he was good at it. Like running, he could swim forever, and the only time he stopped was to 'pee a fountain' as we said from drinking so much water. He drank so much b/c he was so excited and he would just yelp and yelp in the lake and fill himself up with water. 3) This dog was OBSESSED with the ball. If there was a ball nearby, you'd better play with him or else suffer the constant whines and stares. He would point at the ball like he would have pointed at a bird if we had hunted with him. He would stand there and point for an hour if you had a ball in your hand. We finally had to put all balls out of sight unless he was going out to play, for our own sanity! (And Kramer's too). 4). He was affectionate, and only wanted to please us. When I was pregnant with Miles, that dog NEVER left my side. If he or Sawyer heard a noise outside, Sawyer would run outside to check the noise out, and Kramer would jump onto my lap (not so easy for a 75lb dog to do!) and wait until Sawyer came in to give him the 'all clear'. It was the sweetest, most endearing thing I've ever seen an animal do.

Speaking of Sawyer, he and his sister Kola arrived in Abq in January of 2008. They were bred from the same mom, and different dad, and the kennel we got Kramer from shipped them out in a dog crate to us! They were great puppies, they hadn't pooped or peed in the crate for 9 hours! We got to work on training Sawyer, but it was a little harder since we were both working. We often joked that Sawyer had 'second child' syndrome, but after actually having our second child, that isn't quite accurate :). In any case, Sawyer and Kramer became best buds. They were, after all, half brothers, and it showed. I know that they both really loved having each other to play with and snuggle with, especially after we started having babies!

Kramer & Sawyer

Miles and I recently watched the video we shot of bringing Miles V home from the hospital. We sat him down in his car seat on our coffee table, and Kramer was all over that. He ran and got HIS 'baby' blanket and brought it over and dropped it on Miles's lap. I think he was thinking 'Ohhh another person to thrown the ball for me!'

Kramer was only 4 1/2 years old when he died. He wasn't sick, he hadn't shown any symptom's whatsoever of heart or brain issues, and looking at him that Sunday, you would never in a million years have guessed that he would be gone that night. I guess that is just how life and death are. Personally, I have been learning to be thankful for what I have. In the few months leading up to Kramer’s passing, I had been asking Miles if we could seriously consider asking a friend or family member to take Sawyer to live with them. I was starting to freak out a bit about having three kiddos, and thought life would be much simpler with three kiddos and only one hyper-active male dog, instead of two. Well, I was right; life is simpler, and calmer since we lost Kramer. I NEVER would have wished this to happen, but through it God has shown me that He has a plan, and sometimes it is not even close to what I would have wanted, but He heals us anyway.

Here are just a few random memories that I have of Kramer that I wanted to share:

-I remember Miles coming home from playing ball with him across the street and his paw being bloody and cut open. I remember spending the day with him at the animal hospital and having to leave him overnight while he recovered. I don't think either Miles or I slept a wink that night with our baby gone from our house! I also remember him coming home with 7 stitches in his paw and whining because he wanted to go play so badly!

--I remember the 2009 NFC Championship game.. Packers vs. NY Giants. It was a very intense game that I still haven’t quite recovered from… (Thank you very much Brett!). We had a houseful of people, including Kramer and Lainee. The Packers were down by 3 and I ran upstairs and put 'rally shirts' on the dogs. Kramer and Lainee both came down wearing the green and gold :0).

-I remember when we first moved into our house, Miles was building the dog pen in the backyard. I was working from home upstairs, and all of a sudden Kramer came up with half of his face painted blue. He had bit into Miles' chalk line and it had exploded. I died laughing.. see below for picture.

I remember us making Kramer run 'errands' for us. Like I said he only wanted to please, and so sometimes I'd be downstairs cleaning the bathroom and need to restock the TP--- Miles would be upstairs and give Kramer a roll of TP to bring down in his mouth...and he would do it, and go back to get more. :) I will add more memories as they come to me. Right now, enjoy some pictures of our precious dog, who will forever be in our hearts. We love you Kramer, and we miss you everyday.

Loved my puppy kisses!

Snuggling with Daddy!! He ADORED these puppies!

One of my all-time favorite pictures. Too much running for Kramer!

18mo and 3yr Well Checks

One of the many advantages of having kids so close in age is that I can usually schedule their well check visits at the same time! This morning we headed out to our awesome pediatrician's office (seriously if you need a pediatrician in NM, lmk... ours is the best I'm SURE Of it!). Anyway, Max was due for his 18 month appointment and Miles for his 3 yrs. Let me start with Miles.

Miles V 3 year:
Miles was fully prepared at this visit (as much as a 3 year old can be) to get shots, but it turns out he didn't need any. Next year though, he will need his final set and will get 3. But anyway, he weighed in at a whopping 26.4 lbs (he has gained 1.5lbs since his 2 year check), and he is 35 1/2 inches tall. He is still in 24 mos and 2T clothing :). Anyway, he FINALLY made it on the charts. His whole life he has been either 3rd percentile or less, and today he was 10th percentile for height and weight. Alright Miles!

Here is our happy guy ready to see Dr. Koil!

Maxwell 18 months:
Max has always been tiny, even more than his less than 3rd percentile brother. But today, he hit a new record. His height was originally measured at 29 1/4 inches by the nurse, and he weighed in at 17.9lbs! Dr. Koil was concerned about his height b/c it had actually gone down since the last time, so he remeasured him and got him at 30 1/4. So he wasn't concerned about his growth very much, especially since we have a family history of tiny babies (my husband, my brother..). Anyway, I took a picture of his growth chart so you could see his new record:

So that last dot on the right is his current spot on the chart, and you can see his curve. That last line on the bottom is the 3rd percentile... which puts Max about negative 14. Yes, thats -14th percentile!! Haha. Like I said though he thinks Max will level off soon. We went over his eating habits (which are FINE, although slightly picky, but what kid isn't), his sleeping habits, etc. overall, he is a healthy, albiet tiny, kid. He is still wearing 6-9 months clothes, which is actually really nice because he hasn't grown out of much in like a YEAR! Sorry if you see him wearing the same clothes over and over. haha.

Yes I'm tiny but I sure am cute!!!

We are so thankful God continues to bless us with healthy kids!!

And of course, a reward after all that hard work at the dr was in order, so it was off to Chick-fil-a for lunch!

Oh yes, and Dr. Koil, we've thought about it and there is no way the new baby's name is going to be Alwyn! Lol!

Have a great weekend!

Miles V's birthday and other fun times

Well, as usual it's been too long since we've blogged. But such is life with two active boys! I wanted to share a few things that we have been up to in the last few weeks.

Miles V turned 3!!!

Yes, it is true our sweet, loving, smart first born is now a big three year old! As the days pass and he grows more and more, I am constantly amazed at how very blessed we are. He is an angel. I'm sure every parent feels this way about their kids... but I never understood it until recently. A few facts about Miles--- he knows all of his letters by sight and all of the sounds they makes. He can count to 20... He loves loves loves to read books and he can 'read' you a book after you've read it to him just once or twice. He is very good at riding his tricycle and loves to do this whenever he can. He loves playing games, and consistenly beats mom at Cootie and Hi-Ho-Cheery-o. He currently knows four Bible verses by heart (and has even taught some of them to mom!). One of his favorite things to do is go swimming on Friday nights. He LOVES when his daddy comes home! He loves playing with his little brother, and is very excited to meet his new little baby! There are so many more things to say about him but he will probably be up from his nap soon so I better move on :)

For his birthday we bought him a fishtank. He and Max have an abundance of toys and we thought that a fish tank would be fun, and also teach him responsibility. Well, through no fault of his own Larry, Goofy, and Nemo have all gone to fishy heaven in just two weeks. But now we have another batch of fish to love--welcome home Daisy, Goofy (2) and Mickey. We hope you fair better than your previous tank mates.

We also took him to Chuck-E-Cheese for his birthday. He and Max had a blast with their cousins... but perhaps Papa and Daddy had the most fun? That's a hard call! After Chuck-E-Cheese we headed to Great-Grandma Jean's for cake and ice cream. Miles V and Uncle Greg were both celebrating their birthdays... and you can see from the pictures the determination that Miles had in blowing out his candles. Please disregard the spit on the cake... :)

Good morning, Birthday Boy!

Notice the concentration:

My buddy and I:

Happy Birthday, sweet Miles. You make daddy and I soooo proud... we stay up at night and talk about the amazing things you and your brother do each day. We love you so much!

Playgroup
I've been taking the boys to storytime for about a year and a half, and they love it, and I love it! I've met some sweet moms there---Amber,her son Samson, and baby Mae and Melissa, her daughter Felina and baby #2 due in April. We've recently we've started getting the kids together on Thursday mornings to let them play and run off some energy. Miles LOVES it, and he even got to hold 8 week old baby Mae last week, which he talked about for the rest of the day. Looks like hes ready for his baby, don't you think?!

Anyway, I had to share one of my proudest 'mommy' moments. Last week the kids wanted to take a lap around the acre-wide park, and so we walked. And walked. This is a little tedious b/c Max is slow, but the kids love it. When we got back to the park, a sea of kids from the nearby daycare was playing. Our kiddos ran off to play some more and it was almost hard to spot them there were so many others playing. Amber and I were chatting, and I had one eye on Miles across the park at the slides with Samson, and one on Max who was just walking around. You know kids love other little kids, and so all of a sudden Max was surrounded by older kids talking to him, and holding hands. Next time I looked over there, Miles had booked it across the entire park and had Max in a bear hug and was talking to the kids. Then he released Max and went back to play with Samson. A few minutes later we had to make a trip to the potty, so I asked him what he was doing with Max. He said: "I was protecting him, mama. I told them my name was Miles and his name was Max and he was my little brother." OMG, I about lost it. I will NEVER forget that moment, and I'm so thankful once again for that sweet angel's heart!

Zoo Time:

Some weekends we go to church on Saturday night and sometimes we go on Sunday morning. This weekend we went Saturday night, so we decided to get some more use out of our Biopark pass and take the kids to the zoo Sunday morning. We had the place to ourselves, but unfortunately it was a little cold. Apparently big monkeys don't come out until it is at least 40 degrees. But it was a fun trip for the four of us, and the kids LOVE it (Miles and I do too!). Here are a few pics from that trip

Peacocks:

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas...

We were all pretty excited that this hippo decided to go swimming!

Of course no zoo trip is complete without a stop to feed the ducks!

There you have it. Hope you enjoyed our little update!
